Cildo Meireles (Brazilian)
Born in 1948 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he lives and works. Cildo
Meireles is one of Brazil's most significant living artists. Meireles embarked
on his career in the 1960's and became part of an avant-garde that set a new
agenda for Brazilian art. His intriguing works are politically telling as well
as aesthetically seductive. A retrospective of the artist was presented at the
New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York in 1999 and then traveled to the
Museu de Arte Moderna in Rio de Janeiro and the Museu de Arte Moderna in São
Paulo. An extensive presentation of Cildo Meireles work will be shown at Tate
Modern from October 2008 to January 2009. The exhibition will then travel to the
Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
